The Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) Standing Committee on Food has demanded of the government to amend the draft adulteration law of the country.
The demand was made during a meeting of the committee held on Friday.
Chairman of the committee Sufi Bashir Ahmad Durrani was in chair while Haji Fazal Karim and Irshadullah also attended.
The meeting demanded of the government to take business community into confidence before framing any law in this connection. He said that law framed after consultation with the stakeholders will be acceptable to them.
Demanding amendment in adulteration law members of the committee said that the draft law of the government regarding the matter has neither defined adulteration nor the adulterators.
They called for awarding severe punishments and fines for the manufacturers of substandard and injurious food items. However, they also suggested the categorisation of adulteration to frame separate law for it.
The body of the Sarhad Chamber further demanded the merger of Food Act and different government departments working under the parameters of Pure Food Act.
The meeting also demanded the assurance of free movement of wheat all over the country and demanded of the federal government to frame a law under which province would not be allowed to ban the movement of any food item without its approval.
Members of the committee also expressed concern over the financial loss of the business community due to the bird flu and demanded of the government to take preventive measures in this connection.
