KARACHI: Supreme Court (SC) on Monday resumed the hearing of suo motu case regarding lawlessness at its Karachi Registry in the metropolis.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry during the hearing remarked that the Police and Rangers can take steps to control lawlessness in Karachi but they have failed to do so.
He said the court want to know the causes of law and order problems in Karachi, how can the people be protected in absence of the supremacy of the law.
A five-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry is hearing the case.
The bench comprises of Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani, Justice Amer Hani Muslim and Justice Ghulam Rabbani.
According to a private television channel, the proceedings began with the arguments by Iftikhar Hussain Gilani, counsel of Awami National Party (ANP). Gilani said innocent people of the city were being butchered through gang war.
He further stressed secret agencies were not functioning to the most of their capacity despite availing heavy remunerations.
He said the lawlessness in Karachi was not an ethnic issue as the detained terrorists have disclosed that they were trained in India. Gilani also submitted a report of secret agencies about an arrested killer Ajmal Pahari.
Giving remarks, CJ Chaudhry queried as to why Sindh's former Senior Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza kept mum for so long and what was his motive now in bringing to the fore the entire situation.
The ANP counsel Iftikhar Gilani concluded his arguments.
Special arrangements have been put in place to ensure foolproof security at the court's premises.
During the course of hearing, a welfare organization hailing from Lyari, Friends of Lyari requested the court to be a party to the case.
The plea said a total of 65 innocent people were killed in Lyari.
