Recent monsoon spell claims 18 lives in Sindh
KARACHI: The present spell of heavy rains claimed the lives of 18 persons, including children, in different parts of Sindh during last 24 hours.
The deaths in rain related incidents were reported from affected districts including Khairpur, Nawabshah, Dadu and Mirpurkhas on Friday.
Five persons were reportedly killed in Mirpurkhas District in different incidents. Five more persons, including three children, died in Dadu, two in Nawabshah, two in Khairpur and four in Badin district.
The urban and rural areas of the affected districts were submerged with two to four feet water.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has declared Shaheed Benazirabad (Nawabshah) district as calamity hit after heavy rains during last two days.
The Chief Minister Thursday visited Nawabshah where he also announced a grant of Rs 20 million and 20 trucks of ration for the rain victims.
The local administrations as well as other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have also launched rescue and relief activities in the rain-affected areas.
The Met Department recorded 69.0 mm rainfall in Nawabshah, 50.0 mm in Mirpurkhas, 48 mm in Dadu, 28 mm in Hyderabad, 24 mm in Badin and 43 mm in Mithi on Friday.
It also forecast widespread rain/thundershowers with heavy to very heavy falls accompanied with strong gusty winds in all districts of Sindh, including Karachi and eastern parts of the country from September 3 to 6.
Moderate rains with isolated heavy falls are expected in Nawabshah, Khairpur, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar,Hyderabad, Dadu, Tando Muhammad Khan, Badin, Thatta, Thar, Umerkot and Karachi districts and eastern parts of Balochistan.
