NEW YORK: US stocks were flat early Thursday as markets awaited a key report on US manufacturing, after a dismal report on industrial activity in the eurozone sent European stocks sharply lower.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average ticked up 0.53 points (0.00 percent) to 11,614.06 in the first five minutes of trading.
The broader S&P 500 slipped 0.71 points (0.06 percent) to 1,218.18, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite edged up 1.65 points (0.06 percent) to 2,581.11.
Traders were waiting to see whether US industry contracted amid broader economic jitters in August, with the Institute for Supply Management's monthly manufacturing survey to be released at 1400 GMT.
