CHITRAL: Over 50 Taliban militants armed with mortars attacked a checkpost on the Afghan border Saturday, killing three paramilitary troops and wounding four, security officials said.
The assault by fighters who included Taliban took place in Arando village in the north-western district of Chitral early Saturday morning, a senior security official said on condition of anonymity.
"Militants attacked a Frontier Corps checkpost and fired mortars and small arms," the official said.
"Our troops also effectively returned the fire and forced militants to run away," said the official, who was not aware of casualties among the militants.
He said that three Frontier Corps soldiers were killed and four others wounded in the attack, which was launched from Afghanistan's Nuristan area.
"The attackers, who fled back to Nuristan," he said, adding that many militants had taken flight to Afghanistan to avoid military offensives against rebels.
"Our troops are currently carrying out a search and clearing operation in the area," he added.
A senior local police official, Akhtar Hayat, and a senior military official also confirmed the incident and casualties.
