ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed that strict action should be taken against police officials for registration of false First Information Reports (FIRs).
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja comprising Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Qazi Faez Isa heard the case regarding police reforms.
The court in its order directed that appropriate funds and training should be provided to police for their better performance.
"Lawlessness is increasing day by day in the country due to lack of proper behaviour of the police towards poor masses in the police stations," the court observed.
The court directed the federal and provincial governments to implement Article 154 of the CrPc in letter and spirit. It also directed not to arrest any individual without solid evidences as no one could be deprived of his right of freedom. "If any police officer is doing something wrong then strict disciplinary action should be taken against him," the bench ruled.
The court also suggested action against lawyers who were involved in unnecessary delay of any case.
The court also directed the federal and provincial governments to submit record of previous three years of all police employees who were working in Grade 17 and above.
The court also sought reply from Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) regarding constitutional position of Police Act 1861 in Balochistan and Sindh while Law and Justice Commission was also asked to submit report regarding steps for improvement of criminal law.
Later, the case was adjourned till October 3.
