brazilBRASILIA: A Brazilian Air Force plane crashed Tuesday in the southern state of Santa Catarina, killing at least five of the eight occupants, a rescue official said.

Rescue workers said they were alerted by local residents and found five bodies. The search was continuing with the help of an air force helicopter.

Air force officials told AFP there were eight occupants on the C-98A Grand Caravan plane, but declined to comment on their fate. The plane disappeared two hours after taking off from Canoas in Rio Grande do Sul state, heading for Rio de Janeiro.
