ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a bail plea of former minister for religious affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi, facing trial in Hajj arrangements corruption case.
A two-member bench of Justice Jawwad S. Khwaja and Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmani rejected the bail after Additional Attorney General for Pakistan Karim Khan Agha opposed the stance taken by the former minister.
He maintained that the applicant's involvement in the corruption case had been established and the government would not defend such people.
He said that another minister of state for religious affairs name had also been echoed in the scam.
He said that Kazmi had links with Ahmed Faiz, another main accused of the case who had arranged accommodation buildings at higher rates for the pilgrims during Hajj of 2009-2010.
He also reportedly arranged an official passport for Faiz, he added.
After hearing his arguments, the bench rejected the bail plea.
Kazmi and former joint secretary Raja Aftab ul Islam had moved bail pleas and sought intervention against a decision of the Islamabad High Court.
The counsel for Kazmi contended that the challan submitted before the court trial was incomplete and he should be released.
