VADODARA: The Indian Government has released 89 Pakistani fishermen lodged in Indian jails, Veljibhai Masani, senior vice president of Gujarat Fishermen Association (GFA) said.
"I conveyed the news to president of Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum in Karachi over the phone last night,” he said according to Indian media.
"The PFF leader welcomed the decision, and asked me to send the list of the freed fishermen, so that he could get in touch with their families and convey the good news," Masani said.
Masani further said he asked Muhammad Ali Shah PFF chief to step up the efforts to get Indian fishermen (most of whom are from Gujarat and Diu-Daman) languishing in Pakistani prisons to be released.
The freed Pakistani fishermen left Jamnagar Sunday morning, they would return to their home-country via Wagah. All of them were arrested between November 2010 and January 2011. The release of fishermen comes ahead of the Foreign Minister-level talks between India and Pakistan.
On April 11, India had released 39 Pakistani fishermen, and the Pakistani authorities reciprocated by setting free 89 Indian fishermen a few days later.
