waseemKARACHI: The Sindh Home Department is introducing community watch project in the metropolis. The Home Department has finalized the modalities for formal launching of "Community Watch Project" in collaboration with the Clifton Cantonment Board, Defence Housing Authority and Defence Residents Associations.

A statement here on Tuesday said that this was informed to Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department Waseem Ahmed.

It said that the Consultant on Planning, Policy, Public Relations and Home Affairs, Sharfuddin Memon, also presented an implementation plan in a briefing session held at the Home Department.

He said that the project will work on public-private partnership and supervised by Home Minister's Complaint Centre.

"The programme is based on the notion that community interaction and support can help control crime and reduce fear with community members helping to identify suspects, bring problems to the attention of the police otherwise target the vital social issues which give rise to a crime problem in first place, "he emphasized.

The Consultant on Home Affairs pointed out that the project was being started from Defence and adjoining areas as a pilot project and the same would be extended to other areas of the city as well.

"A number of security cameras on high sensitive areas and exit/entry points will be installed for the surveillance, controlled and monitored round the clock at a control room at Beach Avenue, Defence, having latest technology infrastructure", he added.

Waseem Ahmed appreciated the "Community Watch Project" and observed that the project would help uphold the rule of law at one hand and to remove from the hearts and minds of the citizens, the fear of police and Police Stations.

"Community policing support the systematic use of partnerships and problem solving techniques which proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crimes, social disorder and fear of crime", he underlined.
