Beijing_mapBEIJING: One person was killed and 28 others injured, two of them seriously, in an escalator accident at an underground stop in Beijing on Tuesday, the line operator said.

The incident took place during rush hour shortly after 9:30 am at the Beijing Zoo station on line 4, Beijing MTR Corporation said in a statement, attributing the accident to "equipment failure".

An investigation has been launched, it said.

Police declined to comment on the accident when contacted by AFP.
