ISLAMABAD: Chairperson National Assembly Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting Marvi Memon Wednesday said the demand of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) for setting up a technocrats' government was unconstitutional and undemocratic.
Talking to PTV, she said PTI was showing immaturity by not accepting the governments' repeated offers to resolve political issues through dialogue.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, she said, showed great statesmanship, sensibility and flexibility in his address to the nation by giving workable solutions of issues.
She said the Prime Minister announced to set up a judicial commission to probe rigging allegations in the elections 2013, and PTI's march was unjustified following this announcement.
Marvi Memon said a 33-member Parliamentary Electoral Reforms Committee (PERC) was in place and PTI Chief Imran should participate in its proceedings to improve and further cleanse the existing system.
She said delay in formation of a committee was because of late submission of members' names by their respective parties.
She regretted that PTI was not ready to accept a democratically elected government, judiciary and election tribunal working under the Constitution.
To a question, Marvi Memon said, the Standing Committee would ask Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) about violence-inciting contents of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Tahirul Qadri and PTI chief Imran aired by some television channels. "We will ask PEMRA that what action it had taken against such channels," she maintained.
She revealed that there was no mention of polls rigging in PTI's internal report but it highlighted party's flaws and incapability to contest the elections in a better way.
She also disclosed that 80 to 90 per cent PTI members in its core committee meeting opposed Imran Khan for holding the march after announcement of the judicial commission. "Not listening to majority's point of view is dictatorship," she maintained.
Both PAT and PTI, Marvi said, have hijacked the entire country and were putting the lives of their workers at risk as there were reports of terrorist attacks on the march.
She said Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri were misleading the public for personal gains.
She said it was not a right time to hold march as Armed forces were carrying out an important operation 'Zab-e-Azb' in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) to eliminate terrorists challenging writ of the state and carrying out subversive activities in different parts of the country.
Replying to another question, she said the government would keep the dialogue door open till the last moment as it believed in democratic solution of political issues.
Commenting on Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N)'s long march in 2009, she said it was held for restoration of judiciary having no intention of violence.
She expressed the confidence that the government would complete its five- year democratic and constitutional term.
