KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities are sold at rates fixed by the administration.
He directed the officials to ensure that prices of commodities are displayed and stern actions against those involved in selling essential commodities at excessive prices are taken, said a statement on Tuesday.
He said that during this campaign, latest actions taken by the deputed magistrates challaned 101 shop keepers while Rs. 329,000 fine was received from different profiteers selling commodities above rates fixed by the city administration.
He further said that city administration has focused those areas where complaints against price hike were received.
These areas include Saddar, Aram Bagh, Garden, Gulshan Iqbal, Gulzar Hijri, Orangi, Site, Gulberg, North Nazimabad, Ibrahim Hyedri, Air port, Shah Faisal, Korangi and Model Colony.
Total 67 milk sellers, three fruit sellers, two vegetable sellers, 14 shopkeepers of general commodities, 15 chicken sellers, have been fined on selling essential items on excessive prices.
One profiteer was sent to jail for selling the daily commodities on excessive rate.
Commissioner further said that special teams have been formed and deputed in vegetable market to ensure price control and stop artificial shortage of vegetables and fruits.
These actions have made vegetables and fruits available in the open market at lower prices.
He further said that the city administration would continue its efforts to control the prices of fruits, vegetables along with the essential commodities so that people get these items at affordable pricesple get these items at affordable prices.
