NAIROBI: The average price of top Kenyan tea eased to $3.57 per kg at this week's auction from $3.72 per kg last week, traders said on Wednesday.
Kenya is the world's leading black tea exporter and the crop is a major foreign exchange earner in east Africa's largest economy, alongside horticulture and tourism.
Africa Tea Brokers (ATB) said in a market report that Best Broke Pekoe Ones (BP1s) sold at $2.36-$4.78 per kg from $2.82-$4.62 per kg at the previous sale.
Brighter Pekoe Fanning Ones (PF1s) fetched $2.16-$3.06 per kg compared with $2.04-$3.00 last week.
ATB said 144,696 packages were offered, with 12,540 remaining unsold.
Last week 135,975 packages of tea were offered, with 24,276 remaining unsold. It said buyers from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan and Egypt bought more tea than last week.
