KARACHI: Administrator, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Saqib Soomro, has directed the concerned officials of Transport and Communication Department to ensure immediate repair of all faulty traffic signals and installation of these at sites where they are urgently required.
Reviewing the work undertaken by the KMC Transport and Communication Department, Saturday, he said pedestrian bridges planned at Burns Road, near D.J. Science College, Prince Ali Boys School near National Highway, S.M. Taufiq Road, Liaquatabad Number Two C- Area Bus Stop, Altaf Barelvi Road near Bara Board, Star Gate on Sharea Faisal and Nawab Siddiq Ali Khan Road, Nazimabad - 7 must be completed in next six months, that is the given stipulated time.
These bridges, he said are being constructed at sites where they are particularly needed by senior citizens, women and students.
"Our priority sites for these bridges are locations close to schools, colleges, hospitals and shopping malls," said the KMC Administrator.
He also ordered officials to expedite installation of cat eyes at all thoroughfares, alongwith Sharea Faisal, I.I.Chundrigar Road and Shahrah-e-Ata Turk. He said lane marking at major roads must also be completed so as to streamline and smoothen traffic flow in the metropolis.
Soomro said work going on to mark zebra crossing on thorough fares besides lane marking at parking lots must be also expedited.
Director General of Engineering Department, KMC, Niaz Ahmad Soomro, Senior Director, Mohammad Athar and officials of the department were present on the occasion.
Mohammad Athar in his briefing to the KMC administrator said work on 11 pedestrian bridges in the city has been almost completed.
These, he said are mainly meant to protect citizens against accidents and facilitate them in crossing busy roads.
He said six new pedestrians bridges are envisaged to be undertaken in the current fiscal year for which tenders have been approved and work shall begin this month (November) and completed in six months' time.
Director, Roads and Communication Department, KMC said lane marking on Shahrah-e- Ata Turk has already been completed and will be completed in next three days' time at Sharea Faisal.
KMC Administrator directed the officials to ensure minimising the number of road accidents in the city with equal focus on road designing, public education, strict compliance of road safety rules and stringent action against those indulging in wrong use of U-turns.
