Prices of essential food items still high

ISLAMABAD: Prices of most of the essential food items remained on high side last week as compared to the preceding week, reveals a survey conducted by Business Recorder here on Saturday.

Traders and wholesalers in different markets of the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad said that perishable food items i.e. vegetables and fruits showed considerable increase in prices, adding that nominal increase was noted in other essential kitchen items last week as compared to preceding week -- wheat flour bag (10kg) is being sold at Rs 395-400, basin at Rs 135 per kg, fresh milk is being sold at Rs 90 per litre, yogurt at Rs 90, live chicken is being sold at Rs 170-180, eggs were being sold at Rs 84-88 per dozen, vegetable ghee loose at Rs 168 per kg.

The survey noted increase in vegetables prices last week as compared to the preceding week as tomato was available at Rs 100-120 per kg, onions were available at Rs 70-80 per kg. While significant increase was also noted in fruit prices last week as compared to the preceding week as bananas were being sold at Rs 190-250 per dozen against Rs 180-240 per dozen week past price, reflecting an increase of Rs 10 per dozen, apple were being sold at Rs 220 per kg, grapes at Rs 300-350 per kg, peach at Rs 120 per kg, Garma was being sold at Rs 90-100 per kg last week as compared to the preceding week.

The survey noted significant increase in the prices of food items used in Iftar, including Pakora , Samosa , dates , Dahi Bhallay, fruit Chaat, Chana Chaat and Jalebi, as dates were being sold at Rs 150/200 per kg, Pakora at Rs 240-270 per kg, Jalebi at Rs 240-290 per kg, Samosa were being sold at Rs 150-240 per dozen while a plate of Dahi Bhallay, fruit Chaat, Chana Chaat was being sold at Rs 70 each last week as compared to the preceding week.

Meanwhile, meat prices remained unchanged last week as compared to the preceding week, as mutton was available at 600-620 per kg, while beef was being sold at Rs 280-300 per kg.
