RIYADH: US National Security Advisor Tom Donilon met King Abdullah in Riyadh on Tuesday and delivered a letter from President Barack Obama, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.
It gave no details on the contents and a US embassy spokesman declined to comment on the meeting.
Donilon flew in to Riyadh on Monday on a three-day Gulf trip that will also take him to the United Arab Emirates for talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahayan in Abu Dhabi.
A military intervention in Bahrain last month led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE has exposed festering political differences between Riyadh and Washington over revolts rocking the Arab world.
US Defence Secretary Robert Gates held talks in Riyadh last week with King Abdullah, with both sides also voicing concern over Iranian aims in the region and spiralling unrest in Yemen.
Boosted by the arrival of the contingent of Gulf troops, Bahraini security forces in mid-March smashed a month of pro-democracy protests on the streets led by Sunni-ruled Bahrain's Shiite majority.
