ISLAMABAD: Former federal minister of education, Sardar Assef Ahmad Ali has said that higher education will not be affected in the country with the devolution of Higher Education Commission (HEC) as provinces have their own higher education commission.
Talking to Radio Pakistan, he said former President Gen (rtd) Pervez Musharraf converted University Grants Commission into Higher Education Commission to benefit Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman, who had been enjoying the status of Minister of State.
He said the officials of HEC were appointed on huge salaries and they started interference in the affairs of many universities.
Assef said HEC has become a big institution and its salary budget is in billions of rupees, owing to which tens of dozens of colleges are being ignored.
He said HEC also started interference in different constitutional institutions.
He negated the allegation of HEC officials that they are being victimized for checking degrees of politicians.
Replying to another question, he said HEC is being abolished under 18th amendment of the constitution which was unanimously approved by all political parties including opposition.
He however said that the commission will function till further orders of Supreme Court of Pakistan.
