islamabad_fish_400ISLAMABAD: After the recent spells of rains across the country and freezy weather, the demand of fish witnessed a dramtic increase in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. A large number of people were seen at restaurants where fried fish was being served.

According to fish sellers, tonnes of extra catch arrives daily at the wholesale fish market in Rawalpindi that supplies fish in the twin cities. A majority of fish vendors buy fish from the wholesale market while many have direct contact with fish farms they prefer to buy directly from.

Many vendors were also seen on the streets of Rawalpindi and Islamabad selling fish at cheaper rates compared to the market.

The recent demand for fish in the twin cities increased beyond supply and some fish vendors were buying fish from wholesalers of other cities like Alipur Gujranwala and Azad Kashmir.

Many people prefer to eat trout, rahu, mahasir, barb, silver, mushka, salmon, thailla and morakhi.

Talking to PPI, Akhtar Basit Shakeel, owner of a fish shop, who is in this business for the last several years, said that the winter climax is the best time for earning.

"I earn three to four times higher during winter as people prefer to eat fish in cold season" he added.

Another fish seller was of the view that despite the fact that the demand in fish has increased in winter this reality of inflation cannot be denied, which harms the purchasing power of people.

"The demand for fish decreases up to 10 to 20 percent in this season according to my observation," he said.

He further said that the government should take steps to overcome the inflation so that this business can prosper as in the past.
