ISLAMABAD: Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar on Tuesday assured the National Assembly that new transformers, which were being planned to procure, would help lower the transmission losses and improve the electricity supply especially during the summer season.

He was responding to a Calling Attention Notice raised by Chaudhry Abid Sher Ali, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Mian Marghoob Ahmad, Muhammad Pervaiz Malik and Muhammad Afzal Khokhar regarding purchase of electric transformers by Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) at high rates and their non-availability.

There is a plan to replace all the existing transformers with the units having new specifications with the passage of time. The minister said the procurement of transformers had been delayed for a few months due to dispute within Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) and various Distribution Companies (DISCOS) regarding purchase of new transformers.

He said according to PEPCO and other independent consultants, the transformers with new design and specifications would reduce 27 per cent transmission losses in 200KV transformers and 23 per cent in smaller one.

This resulted in high prices, he maintained. Naveed Qamar said improved efficiency of transformers would recover the extra price in form of controlling losses. "If the transformers are not procured in good times, there will be a huge load on in hot summer season and we will be unable to replace the faulty ones due to their non-availability in stocks," he maintained.

The minister said companies dealing in old type of transformers were creating confusion about the specifications and prices of the new units for their personal interest.

He requested the members for avoiding to exaggerate the matter by giving wrong facts and figures on floor of the house to mislead the masses. There was dire need to join hands for the national cause of meeting the energy shortage.
