SANAA: Yemeni security forces shot dead three protesters and wounded 70 in the flashpoint city of Taez on the Muslim day of rest, medics said on Saturday, updating a previous toll.
In addition to those killed and wounded by gunfire on Friday, hundreds suffered from tear gas inhalation, said the medics at a field hospital set up near the site of an anti-government sit-in in the city, south of the capital Sanaa.
Witnesses had said on Friday that two people were killed and dozens wounded when security forces fired live rounds at the protesters in Al-Hurriya (Liberty) Square who were calling for the departure of veteran President Ali Abdullah Saleh, power since 1978.
Saleh on Friday rejected an exit plan announced by Qatar on behalf of the six Gulf Arab states, but his office said he was still open to mediation.
