TOKYO: Northwest Japanese utility Hokuriku Electric Power Co said on Wednesday it may impose rolling blackouts in the summer, if two nuclear reactors remain shut.
Hokuriku Electric, headquartered in Toyama in northwest Japan, manually shut the 540 megawatt No.1 reactor at its sole Shika plant in late February for unplanned repair work.
The company began planned maintenance on the Shika plant's 1,358 MW No.2 reactor on March 11.
The reactor was safely shut before a strong earthquake and tsunami hit the northeast coast of Japan the same day, triggering the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years at Tokyo Electric Power Co. Fukushima plant.
Hokuriku Electric said it would impose new safety measures before restarting the two reactors.
