NEW YORK: The US stock market opened in positive territory on Wednesday, buoyed by rising markets in Europe and Asia.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 41.21 points (0.33 percent) to 12,435.11, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite rose 23.21 points (0.83 percent) to 2,814.40.
The broad-market S&P 500-stock index rose 5.66 points (0.42 percent) at 1,338.29.
The gains matched rises seen in Hong Kong, Shanghai, London, Frankfurt and Paris.
"Strength among several major overseas markets has helped provide a positive backdrop," said analysts at Briefing.com.
That backdrop was also boosted by merger and acquisition news.
The once-dominant US video chain Blockbuster was sold at auction to satellite TV chain Dish Network for just $320 million Wednesday after mismanagement and on-line competition pushed it into bankruptcy.
