KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that the government is initiating various measures to transform prisons into real reformation centres for inmates.
This he said while speaking on the occasion of handing over consignment of arms and ammunition to jail authorities here on Wednesday.
He said President Asif Ali Zardari has also issued directives for provision of facilities to inmates as per rules.
The chief minister said that a number of steps have been taken under jail reforms programme to improve the condition of jails.
He said overcrowding was a big issue which is being addressed by constructing new rooms in jails.
Attention is also being given to provide education in jails to make the inmates useful citizens.
He said the government is providing arms and other equipment worth Rs 34 million to ensure security of the jails.
The chief minister said there is no political prisoner in any jail of the province as PPP doesn't believe in the politics of revenge.
Provincial minister for Law, Prisons Ayaz Soomro while speaking on the occasion said that Sindh Government is spending a huge amount to improve the condition of jails and welfare of prisoners.
He said a number of facilities including public call office (PCO), video conference and professional training is made available for prisoners in jails.
Earlier, Secretary prisons Dost Ali Baloch briefed about the measures being taken to improve the condition of the prisons and welfare of the inmates.
