Great reporting does not always produce good storytelling but there is no great storytelling without great reporting, Stephen Buckley, faculty member of the Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communication told the participants of Health Media Conference on Saturday.
The conference was organized by the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) at its main campus. Stephen stories can change the lives it helps in making the world better place. "The great storytelling connects both head and heart", he said, adding that storytelling enlarges the vision of the storyteller.
Sharing the elements of storytelling, he emphasized on shoe-leather reporting the true essence of story. "Good stories could only be digged on the spot..." Stephen said. He said storyteller must reveal characters; add drama and tension to make the story interesting with brief but meaningful exchanges.
He said stories must be connected to the end with beginning with strong final words. "It is good to share the most memorable part of the story at an end", he added. AKUH manager communications Sehrish Shaban spoke about the hospitals as new source of reporting.
Veteran journalist Muhammad Ziauddin discussed the challenges faced by the reporters during health reporting. Earlier in a session of workshop, panel discussion was held on dealing with social taboos and crises situations in health care. Panel was led by Dr Unab, Dr Nuzhat Farouqi, Dr Qaurat Khan and Dr Badar Fazal.
Another discussion panel was conducted on health trends where the speakers spoke on prevalent health issues and preventive measures. AKUH chief nursing officer Salma Jaffar discussed the role of nursing care in Pakistan. CIME director Prof Charles Docherty spoke on futuristic healthcare education.
