The Supreme Court Wednesday upholding the Lahore High Court verdict maintained life imprisonment of a female who is convicted of killing a man in the court of additional sessions judge Sheikhupura. A three-member bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa and comprising Justice Tariq Masood and Justice Manzoor Ahmed Malik heard the appeal of Musharraf Bibi, who had killed a man named Sikandar.
Justice Khosa said in the courtroom that a woman opened fire and murdered a person in front of everyone, adding the court is the place of justice and if the murder takes place in the courtroom then where the people would go for justice.
Justice Khosa observed that convict Musharraf Bibi that took advantage of being a woman and carried the pistol inside the court. He remarked if the bullet had hit the judge or the counsels then what would have happened. Justice Khosa inquired from Musharraf Bibi's counsel Ashraf Kamboyo, "When the firing incident took place in the courtroom then what had you heard that who had murdered."
He replied: "I heard that a burqa-clad woman had murdered," adding but Musharraf Bibi was not wearing burqa in the courtroom when she was arrested. Upon that Justice Khosa remarked if she had not killed then why the judge and lawyer present in the court gave false evidence.
Musharraf Bibi in 2009 had killed a man, Sikandar Hayat, in the court of additional district and sessions judge Sheikhupura. According to appellant's counsel the deceased had allegedly killed Musharraf Bibi's brother. The trial court had awarded death sentence to the accused, while the Lahore High Court converted the death sentence into life imprisonment.
