Minister for Foreign Affairs Khurram Dastagir Khan on Monday informed the Senate that the step taken by a country to block Pakistan's request at the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee to get a terrorist, Omar Khalid Khorasani, listed, is regrettable.
In a ministerial response to a question asked by senators regarding UN sanctions on Jamaat-ul-Ahrar (JuA) leader Abdul Wali alias Umer Khalid Khurasani, the minister said that efforts are being made to designate Khurrasani as globally recognized terrorist.
"A member country opposed designating Khorasani as a global terrorist and placed a technical hold. Consequently on May 4, 2018, the UN Security Council's sanctions committee rejected Pakistan's application," he added. The minister, who has recently taken over, said that he could not divulge on the issue any further, given the sensitivity of the matter. To this Saleem Mandiviwalla, Deputy Chairman Senate, who was presiding over the session, proposed an in-camera briefing.
However, the minister did not agree with the chair, saying it is a sensitive issue and once the sanctions committee of the UN meets again, he would come and brief the House in detail. Earlier, the Senate passed 'The Industrial Relations (Amendment) Bill, 2017.' The chair referred five other bills to concerned standing committees for deliberations and report.
The referred bills include: The Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2018, The Islamabad Pure Food Authority Bill, 2018, The Compulsory Blood Test of the Relatives of Thalassemia Patient Bill, 2017, The Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2018, and The Pakistan Courier and Logistics Regulatory Bill, 2018.
PTI Senator Muhammad Azam Swati, who had floated the bill to amend the Industrial Relations law, urged the chair to give ruling on early passage of the bill from National Assembly as its term is ending, but there came no response from the chair.
