Punjab Wildlife & Parks arranged a walk and seminar here on Saturday to celebrate 'World Migratory Bird Day' which, is celebrated annually on the second weekend of May to highlight the need to protect migratory birds and their habitats. The United Nations is one of the many organizations that support this global awareness campaign.
On the second weekend each May, people around the world celebrate World Migratory Bird Day by organizing public events such as bird festivals, education programs and bird-watching excursions. The event was created to help turn the world's attention to the wonders of bird migration and the need for their conservation. Each year, the total number of registered World Migratory Bird Day events has steadily increased along with the number of countries in which these events occurred.
Speaking at the seminar, Director General Wildlife & Parks Punjab Khalid Ayaz Khan said that the protection force and field staff deputed at wet lands in the province is taking all out steps for the protection of migratory birds. He said that hundreds of thousands of birds migrate every year from cold areas at the start of winter to Pakistan and India. They reside in different areas of Pakistan including Chashma Barrage, Taunsa Barrage, and Uchhali complex, Head Marala, Qadirabad and other big and small lakes of Punjab.
Those who attended the walk and seminar include Deputy Director Wildlife (Headquarters) Muhammad Naeem Bhatti, Deputy Director Wildlife Lahore Region Syed Zafarul Hassan, Deputy Director Wildlife Publicity Aamir Masud and others. Programme was also addressed by the additional secretary forest, wildlife and fisheries Shahid Rasheed Awan and WWF Pakistan's Dr Uzma Khan.
