Punjab Food Authority has decided for getting help from Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) in order to make mapping method more effective for on-going drive against the sewerage and industrial waste water irrigated vegetables in across Punjab. This was revealed by Director General PFA Noor ul Amin Mengal during the supervision of operational activities of food safety teams against sewerage water irrigated vegetables in the provincial metropolis.
Last week, PFA has divided Punjab region in zones through mapping and declared several areas as 'Red Zone' where sewerage and industrial waste water was used to irrigate vegetable crops. Following the DG PFA Mengal's directions, unhygienic food points and adulterators, an operation was launched under the supervision of food safety officers in several districts of Punjab.
During drive against poisonous vegetables, PFA has discarded thousands of kilograms chemical contaminated vegetable crops of garlic, coriander, spinach, turnip, potato and daikon by ploughing that cultivating on more than 5384 Kanal lands during carried out crackdown through province.
According to details, sewerage water treated vegetables cultivated on the area of 1136 Kanal in Lahore, 21 Kanal in Faisalabad, 48 Kanal in Toba Take Singh and ploughed 408 Kanal of crops in Jhang. DG Noor ul Amin Mengal said that PFA will take satellite help from SUPARCO for making more effective mapping systems. He said that PFA's vigilance cell and food safety teams are fully active by keeping an eye on food related issues which is being making a cause of health diseases for consumers. DG said that PFA is giving awareness to farmers about the impact of poisonous vegetables on consumer's health as well as, directed to continue operation against violators.
