The Sindh Assembly on Monday passed amendments to laws to rename proposed private universities named after Altaf Hussain. After amendments to two Acts of 2014, the universities will be named after Maulana Abdul Sattar Edhi and Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro tabled "The Altaf Hussain University at Karachi (Amendment) Bill, 2017 and The Altaf Hussain University at Hyderabad (Amendment) Bill, 2017.
"He showed pride in holding British citizenship," Khuhro said of the founder of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, "and despite that we named [universities] after him," Khuhro said, adding that he also wants India to intervene in Pakistani affairs.
MQM MPA Faisal Sabzwari supported the amendments, but he invited the PPP government's attention to the lack of a higher academic institution in Hyderabad, which still needs a public sector university. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional also voted in favour of the amendments. Latter a resolution on the water crisis in Sindh was unanimously adopted in the session. The resolution was tabled by PPP legislator Taimur Talpur.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said that he is sending a reminder to the federal government on the calling of a meeting of the CCI to discuss the water and gas issues of the province. He blamed Wapda for the current crisis since it did not store water in dams at times of high flow, which is why dams have not helped in water conservation.
The Sindh cabinet approved the Sindh Revenue Board (Amendment) Bill, the Jacobabad Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Bill, the Sindh Development and Maintenance of Infrastructure Cess Bill, the Sindh Coal Authority (Amendment) Bill, and the Sindh Shaheed Recognition and Compensation (Amendment) Bill. The assembly was adjourned until Tuesday morning.
