ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday referred to Chief Justice Sindh High Court, a contempt plea moved by Afaq Ahmed, chief of Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi), for non-implementation of its directives over Karachi unrest case.
A three-Judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry told Afaq Ahmed, who appeared in person, that they had not given the final verdict over the issue, but passed directives and a committee headed by Chief Justice Sindh High Court was reviewing the implementation process.
The bench asked Afaq Ahmed to approach the relevant forum for his grievances.
Later, talking to mediapersons after the proceedings, Afaq Ahmed said that he had moved the application because, Apex Court's directives over elimination of 'No Go Areas' had not been implemented so far. Political parties are not allowed to function properly in Karachi, he claimed.
He said that he was also told by the high ups in the provincial government to resume his political activities in Lahore if he was facing problems. "There is no end to target killing incidents. The police record shows that about 6,500 persons have been killed during last four months in four districts of Karachi," he maintained while showing official documents.
Afaq said that out of total 3,230 criminal cases in Sindh which had been pardoned under annulled NRO, only six had been re-opened.
Replying to a query, he said that he never took refuge behind NRO and fought for his innocence through legal manner.
He said his party was ready to meet anyone including Altaf Hussain for restoration of complete peace in the city.
Supporting de-weaponization of Karachi city, Afaq opined that all licenses whether legal or illegal should be canceled. "I also ask my party workers, if they have weapons, to lay down," he added while replying to another question.
The MQM-H chief, who was released from jail recently, rejected the allegations about his past role in target killings and said that a statement of former Interior Minister Moeen Haider in Musharraf's government was on record, saying that there were no go areas in Karachi.
He called upon all political parties including PPP, MQM, PML-N and others to consider the issue of Karachi, as any adverse situation there, could cause direct impacts upon the whole country.
