Democratic process, federation strengthened by coalition govt: experts

ISLAMABAD: Former head of the department of Political Science in Punjab University Dr Rasheed Ahmed Khan said that the incumbent government is a coalition government composed of many political parties, which shows that no single party is in a position to solve the problems of the country.

Talking to Radio Pakistan, Rasheed Ahmed said that the role of coalition parties is crucial in the democratic process and that people are happy over the positive and supportive role being played by the coalition partners in the incumbent setup.

Dr Rasheed said that passage of 18th and 19th amendments in the constitution show the political maturity of the political parties. He said that the political parties in Pakistan have become mature; they have realized that they should get rid of the internal differences and form coalitions.

Professor of Political Science in Peshawar University Dr Ghulam Mustafa has said that the coalition governments in the third world countries are usually weak but the incumbent PPP-led coalition government in Pakistan is considerably strong.

Dr Mustafa said that the incumbent government has strengthened the federation of Pakistan. He said that the most important issues facing the incumbent government are the formation of new provinces, the NRO, and Memogate and never compromises on the national interests.

He said that the role of opposition is greater than the ruling party or coalition. He said that the opposition should play a constructive role in the politics of the country. He said that a better opposition should be intelligent, courageous, and aware of the problems of the people.

Senior journalist and analyst Altaf Qureshi has said that the PPP and its allies have tried their best to promote the democratic process and they are very successful intheir ambition and will nurture the tree of democracy for the future generations to reap its fruit.

He said that the PPP led coalition government has been successful in building up a national consensus over the vital national issues. He added that the government took all the stake-holders on board over vital nation issues. He said that democracy and economy are directly related to each other.
