ATC indicts Karachi mayor, others in May 12 violence case

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) indicted on Tuesday Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar in the May 12 violence case.

During today's hearing, the Karachi mayor, who is also a leader of  Muttahida Qaumi Movement - Pakistan (MQM-P), appeared before the court along with others who were suspected to be involved in the violence, local media reported.

The ATC indicted the mayor along with the other suspects in one case related to the May violence. The accused pleaded not guilty to the crime. The court has summoned witnesses to record their statements at the next hearing that will be held on June 23.

In 2007, Karachi saw violent clashes between activists of political parties over deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s visit to the city. Various cases had been registered after the carnage.The clash led to several injuries while 50 people were killed.
