ADB approves $270m loan for Khanki Barrage
LAHORE: Punjab Irrigation Secretary Irfan Elahi said the Asian Development Bank (ADB) had approved $270 million loan for construction of the New Khanki Barrage as replacement of 120 year-old Khanki headquarters.
According to a handout issued here on Thursday, he said the Punjab Irrigation Department had taken up rehabilitation and modernisation of barrages in the province in phased programmes.
On the basis of feasibility and detailed design studies, the New Khanki Barrage is proposed 900ft downstream of existing headquarters for which a project costing Rs 23,442 million was prepared and approved by ECNEC in 2009.
Irfan Elahi added that civil work was scheduled to start in September 2012 and complete in five years.
Implementation of the project will ensure sustainable irrigation supplies to the command area for the next 100 years and it will help alleviate poverty and bring prosperity to districts of Gujranwala, Hafizabad Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh and Jhang, he added.
He said that after its completion, it would irrigate more than three million acres of land.
