Android makers won’t integrate Face ID in their phones as it’s too costly

Face ID and in-display fingerprint sensors have recently emerged as a new trend in smartphone industry with almost every one attempting to integrate them in their new phone. However, Android makers have limited the trend as they have decided not to integrate Face ID but will integrate in-display sensors.

A report by DigiTimes quoting supply chain sources informed that now Android makers are ‘rushing’ towards integrating in-display fingerprint sensors in their smartphones and rejecting the recreation of iPhone X’s 3D sensor-based face recognition modules for Android because they are just too costly.

Vivo becomes first brand to launch on-screen fingerprint sensor

The Android makers are supposedly looking forward to implement Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensors instead of 3D face recognition technology that was first seen in iPhone X due to financial reasons. Also, the infrared depth-sensing facial recognition system present in iPhone X is way too expensive to replicate for Android devices.

Hardware and software’s cost for the TrueDepth 3D sensors are around $60 per unit, which is pretty expensive when it is been required to be produced in huge quantities.

As per Tech Juice, according to reports, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 9 and Huawei’s upcoming Mate 11 will come in with in-display fingerprint sensors. However, Vivo is the only brand till yet to introduce the technology in its Vivo X20 Plus UD.
