RAWALPINDI: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Thursday convicted human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari and her husband, advocate Hadi Ali Chattha, sentencing them to a 10-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine in a case involving allegations of violating security protocols and assaulting police personnel.

ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra announced the reserved verdict at a makeshift court in Adiala Jail, sentencing the couple to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 200,000 each.

The court sentenced the couple under the relevant provision of Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (7ATA) to 10 years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs100,000. Furthermore, under Section 353 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), Imaan and Chattha were sentenced to two years in prison and fined Rs 50,000 each.

Similarly, under Section 186 of the PPC, PPC, the court sentenced them to a one-year prison sentence and a fine of Rs 50,000 each. As per the court verdict, the combined prison terms under the three provisions amount to 13 years.

However, the court granted the defendants the benefit of Section 382-B of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), allowing the sentences to run concurrently, which means an effective prison term of 10 years.
