ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has notified the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Wing at its Secretariat, a move which the electoral body has described as having aimed at strengthening its institutional capacity.

The AI Wing has been set up “with immediate effect and until further orders in order to strengthen the institutional capacity for the effective adoption, integration, and utilisation of Artificial Intelligence technologies, in public interest,” reads a notification recently issued by the ECP.

In accordance with the notification, dated 1 October, ECP’s Director General (Information Technology-Policy and Planning) Khizer Aziz shall serve as the Administrative In-Charge of the newly established AI Wing and shall oversee its official affairs “until the requisite manpower is provided and a formal organisational structure is established.”

On the seventh of last month, the ECP held a meeting, attended by senior ECP management, under the chair of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. The meeting decided to establish the AI Wing besides Digital Office/E-Office.

A press release issued after this meeting had stated that the AI Wing would render technical assistance to different ECP departments in order to “digitise their capabilities.”

According to the press release, the CEC directed that the training of all the personnel of the ECP wings related to the Digital Office or E-Office be completed by 15 October, in order to launch a “full digital system” of the E-Office in the ECP by the last week of December.

In addition, the 7th September meeting approved the launch of the ECP’s new “dynamic, colourful, interactive, public-friendly website so that stakeholders benefit maximum from it.”
