KARACHI: The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved seven major foreign-funded development projects for Sindh, spanning water and sanitation, education, irrigation, property revenue, environmental sustainability, and urban infrastructure.

The projects were approved at a CDWP meeting, says official statement on Friday.

According to the Planning and Development Board, the approvals would facilitate international financing for key development initiatives in the province and strengthen coordination between provincial departments and development partners.

The approved projects include the USD15 million Project Readiness Financing (PRF) for preparing urban and water-sector projects in Sindh under the Local Government, Housing and Town Planning Department.

The CDWP also approved the USD450 million Sindh Transformational Accelerated Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (STAR WASH) Services Phase-I project, comprising USD300 million from the World Bank and USD150 million from the Asian Development Bank.

Another major project is the Irrigation Department’s improvement of the Kalri Baghar Feeder and Keenjhar Lake under the K-IV water supply project. It involves cement-concrete lining of the Kalri Baghar Feeder Upper Phase-I for Rs50.989 billion.

The Sindh Property Revenue Enhancement Programme (Sindh PREP), involving USD150 million in World Bank financing, was also approved. The programme is aimed at improving property revenue systems in the province.

The CDWP further approved the USD150 million Sindh Early Learning Enhancement Project through Classroom Transformation (SELECT-II), financed by the World Bank and implemented through the School Education and Literacy Department.

The Sindh Secondary Education Improvement Project — Second Additional Financing, supported by a USD100 million loan and a USD10 million grant from the Asian Development Bank, was also approved.

The seventh project, Pakistan Finance for Lowering Emissions in the Water Sector (PAK-FLOW), involves USD20 million in World Bank financing and focuses on reducing emissions in the water sector and promoting environmental sustainability.

The Planning and Development Board members acknowledged that the board’s Chairman, Najam Ahmed Shah, played a key role in advancing the processing and coordination of the projects and facilitating their consideration by the CDWP.

It said the approvals would provide opportunities to improve essential public services and infrastructure, strengthen education outcomes, promote sustainable water management and support institutional reforms throughout the province.

The board said it would continue working with provincial departments and international development partners to advance development priorities and support sustainable, climate-resilient development in the province.
