Published Updated

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has made SMS registration for the fuel subsidy scheme completely free to facilitate low- and middle-income households, the Prime Minister’s Office said on Thursday.

Under the scheme, owners of motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles with engine capacity of up to 800cc are being provided fuel subsidies across the country, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Under the revised facility, applicants can register by sending a free SMS to 9771 in the following format: REG, followed by a space, CNIC number, vehicle number plate, first letter of the province where the vehicle is registered, and the vehicle registration date.

The Prime Minister’s Office said the move was made on the prime minister’s instructions to make the registration process easier for eligible applicants.

The development comes a day after, PM Shehbaz directed the government to set up facilitation desks at petrol stations to help eligible citizens register for and receive fuel subsidies.

Chairing a review meeting, the prime minister had directed that the facilitation desks should be staffed by administration officials, volunteers and petrol station personnel.

They will guide eligible citizens through the registration process and other requirements.

Complete details to avail the fuel subsidy are available here.
