KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has ordered authorities to ensure public transport fares are reduced following the recent decline in diesel prices, warning operators against overcharging passengers.

Memon-holding portfolios of Information, Transport and Mass Transit- directed the provincial Transport Department and other officials to enforce the corresponding fare reduction and take immediate action against transporters charging fares above the approved rates.

“The benefit of reduced diesel prices must reach the public,” Memon said, stressing that providing relief to commuters was the government’s responsibility.

He instructed officials to strengthen monitoring on public transport routes and respond promptly to complaints of overcharging.

He warned that transporters would not be allowed to charge arbitrary fares and said violations would result in legal action.

“The charging of excessive fares despite the reduction in diesel prices will not be tolerated,” he said.

The Minister said the Sindh government was taking measures to ensure that lower fuel costs translated into relief for commuters across the province.
