KARACHI: Ethiopia and Pakistan agreed on Friday to forge a strong parliamentary bond to enhance bilateral cooperation across trade, investment, agriculture, aviation, and culture.
The discussion took place during a meeting in Islamabad between Dr. Oumer Hussien Oba, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia, and Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, the Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan.
The two sides reviewed growing bilateral relations across various sectors, explored new avenues for cooperation, and reaffirmed their commitment to taking their ties to new heights.
Ambassador Dr. Oumer reaffirmed the deep-rooted and long-standing bilateral relations between the two nations, highlighting their shared history, culture, and values. Emphasising Ethiopia’s strategic positioning as the seat of the African Union and a vital gateway to the African continent, the Ambassador noted that Pakistan can leverage its relations with Ethiopia to significantly increase its footprint across Africa.
The Senate Chairman expressed his deep appreciation for the rapid economic development, impressive growth, and comprehensive domestic reforms currently taking place across Ethiopia. To further strengthen people-to-people ties, the Chairman emphasised that cultural exchanges and religious tourism must serve as essential foundations for the bilateral relationship.
Highlighting the agricultural potential of Pakistan, the Senate Chairman stressed the need to exchange knowledge and technical expertise to achieve the shared goals of development and prosperity in the Global South.
Towards the conclusion of their discussion, the two sides also agreed on establishing parliamentary friendship groups and exchanging parliamentary delegations to further strengthen institutional and diplomatic relations.
