HYDERABAD: President Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industry, Muhammad Saleem Memon, has expressed serious concern over the performance of WASA Hyderabad, stating that the non-availability of water and the supply of substandard water during Eid-ul-Adha are clear indicators of the organization’s administrative failure.
He said that even during the important religious occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, water supply remained severely disrupted in various parts of the city, causing immense hardship for residents. It appears as though Hyderabad is being left at the mercy of a tanker mafia, similar to the situation in Karachi.
In many areas of Hyderabad, water has not been supplied for months, while tanker operators continue to dominate. The most affected areas include Kohsar, Latifabad, Qasimabad, Hali Road, Station Road, Phuleli, Shahi Bazaar, and adjoining localities.
He stated that WASA Hyderabad has failed not only to provide the required quantity of water but also to ensure its quality. Even in areas where water is being supplied, it is often foul-smelling, muddy, and hazardous to human health, making it completely unfit for consumption.
He further noted that the institution continues to suffer from a severe financial crisis and has failed to manage its financial affairs effectively. As a result, employees are still deprived of their salaries. The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that despite acute water shortages and sanitation challenges during Eid-ul-Adha, the organization has effectively been left administratively neglected. Consequently, even basic public services are not being delivered, and instead of alleviating public hardships, the institution is contributing to them.
The President HCSTSI highlighted that, in addition to the water shortage, the city’s sewerage system has completely collapsed. In numerous commercial and residential areas, sewage water that accumulated before Eid-ul-Adha has yet to be cleared, causing severe difficulties for residents, traders, and customers alike. The resulting unhygienic conditions and foul odor are not only disrupting business activities but also increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.
Expressing disappointment, he said that despite the Sindh Government’s decision to transform WASA into the Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Corporation (HW&SC); citizens have seen no meaningful improvement. Instead of enhanced performance, both water supply and sewerage-related issues have become even more severe. Residents continue to struggle for access to clean drinking water, proper drainage, and other basic municipal services.
