World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day today: President pays tribute to volunteers, staff, partners

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to the volunteers, staff, and partners of the Red Cross and Red Crescent for their outstanding humanitarian services, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare systems and ensuring equitable access to medical services across the country.

In his message on World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, being observed on May 8, 2026, the president particularly appreciated the role of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society, established under the Pakistan Red Cross Order, 1947, issued by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He praised the organisation for its unwavering dedication to humanitarian causes and public welfare.

The president said the day serves as an important reminder of the invaluable contributions made by humanitarian workers in emergency response, disaster management, and healthcare delivery, especially for vulnerable communities. He said that Pakistan, in line with the vision of the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination, continues to move toward Universal Health Coverage to ensure accessible, equitable, and resilient healthcare services for all citizens.

Highlighting the contributions of the Red Crescent Movement, the president said the organisation has played a vital role in supporting public health initiatives, including disaster preparedness, maternal and child healthcare, community-based medical services, and health awareness campaigns. These efforts, he added, have significantly supported national initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes in underserved and remote regions.

Referring to emerging global and national challenges, including climate-related disasters, viral diseases, and public health emergencies, the president stressed the need for enhanced cooperation among government institutions, humanitarian organisations, and local communities.

He observed that resilient healthcare systems require not only infrastructure and resources but also compassion, volunteerism, and a strong spirit of service.

He reaffirmed the Government of Pakistan’s commitment to expanding partnerships with humanitarian organisations to ensure timely and effective healthcare delivery through integrated and evidence-based policies.

The president also urged all stakeholders to renew their commitment to humanity, solidarity, and public service, calling for collective efforts to build a healthier, safer, and more inclusive Pakistan.
