HYDERABAD: Green school education and climate-smart learning are increasingly recognized as critical priorities, with education and development experts emphasizing the urgent need to integrate climate change and environmental stewardship into school curricula to equip future generations to respond to escalating environmental challenges.
Responding to this need, the Sindh Community Foundation (SCF), under the Green Thatta Initiative led by the Deputy Commissioner Thatta and supported by the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), is implementing a school-based tree plantation and environmental awareness campaign across Union Councils Bijora and Garho.
To date, the campaign has reached 17 schools, engaging 360 students in plantation activities and experiential environmental learning. A total of 290 indigenous tree saplings including Neem, Sukhchain, Bedmushk, Almond, Ficus, and Jamun have been planted by students under the “A Child, A Tree” campaign. The initiative is ongoing and is expected to expand to 23 schools, with remaining activities scheduled in the coming days.
Speaking on the occasion, Javed Hussain, Executive Director of SCF, emphasized that integrating climate education into school systems is essential for long-term resilience, particularly in climate-vulnerable coastal areas like Thatta facing soil erosion and climate variability. He stressed that climate-smart and green education is no longer optional but imperative, and must be systematically integrated into school curricula.
