LAHORE: Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique announced that essential facilities are being provided in selected villages across 10 divisions of the province in the first phase of the project.

He shared these insights during a meeting held on Wednesday to review the progress of the Model Village Programme and Punjab Development Programme (PDP), where Punjab Rural Municipal Services Company (PRMS) CEO Khurram Pervez was also present.

The Minister emphasised the expansion of the Model Village Programme throughout Punjab, stating that work has begun to transform 7,500 additional villages into exemplary models. He remarked, “Maryam Nawaz’s vision of a ‘Sohna (Beautiful) Punjab’ is changing the fate of the province.” He noted that PDP schemes are being implemented in cities, while model village initiatives are progressing in rural areas.

During the meeting, Rafique directed the officials present to ensure the timely completion of development schemes, suggesting that a second shift be initiated where necessary. He also insisted on using coloured tuff tiles in villages, modelled after those in Lahore.

He acknowledged that rehabilitating ponds in villages could significantly enhance rural life. “Under the Model Village Programme, after cleaning the ponds, we will install water treatment plants. Additionally, water from cesspools can be utilised for irrigating crops,” he stated.

“The Punjab Local Government Department is currently overseeing the PDP schemes in 51 cities, with the completion of underground water tanks prioritised. In addition, the construction of roads, streets, and the installation of streetlights will be carried out,” he added.
