LAHORE: Director General Punjab Food Authority Muhammad Asim Javaid said on Thursday that its food safety teams so far have conducted inspections of 1,363,198 food units, resulting in the closure of 4,390 units over violations.
Furthermore, 2,624 FIRs have been lodged against those involved in adulteration of milk, meat and other food items.
The PFA has also provided professional training to 559,593 food handlers to enhance their capacity and ensure compliance with food safety standards.
The DG said steps are being taken to revamp the dairy sector, oil and ghee industry and water sector. A joint committee has been formed in collaboration with the livestock department to improve milk production and quality, while laws and standards are being aligned with international principles to ensure provision of quality milk.
He said that planning is underway to promote cold chain systems, milk chillers and modern packaging infrastructure. Policy measures are also being introduced in line with international standards to promote halal food and meat exports. Efforts are being made to increase meat production through breed improvement programs and promotion of high-quality livestock.
He said effective and timely implementation of recommendations, policy guidelines and regulatory frameworks is being ensured. He said that modern, science-based interventions are being introduced to improve the quality, safety and traceability of meat, while state-of-the-art food laboratories are being established at all divisional headquarters of Punjab.
He further stated that ensuring the provision of safe and healthy food is a top priority under the vision of the Chief Minister Punjab, adding that these initiatives represent not just a plan but the future of food safety in Punjab. Strategic planning from policy to implementation has been accelerated to achieve this goal.
