OGDCL commences oil production from horizontal well in Hyderabad

  • The well produces 460 barrels of oil per day

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), Pakistan’s largest E&P, has initiated oil production from its exploratory well in Sindh.

The listed E&P disclosed the development via a notice to the bourse on Tuesday.

“We are pleased to inform that OGDCL has successfully commenced oil production from its development well Pasakhi-13, marking a historic milestone as Pakistan’s first successful horizontal oil well in clastic reservoir (lower Goru - A sand),” read the notice.

The company shared that Pasakhi-13 is located in the Hyderabad district and produces 460 barrels of oil per day (BPD).

OGDC enhances oil production at Kal-03 well by massive 1,400%

It shared that the well was drilled to a measured depth of 2,966 meters, including a 546- meter horizontal section with application of geo-steering technology, enabling precise navigation within a narrow 3-meter drilling window to optimally target the sweet spot within the reservoir.

Furthermore, the well was completed and tested using a short-string Electric Submersible Pump (ESP), optimised for horizontal well configurations.

“Despite challenging reservoir characteristics, horizontal drilling enabled enhanced reservoir exposure, delivering nearly threefold higher production compared to offset wells under similar conditions,” it added.

Pasakhi-13 well is part of the Pasakhi & Pasakhi North Development & Production Lease (D&PL), where OGDCL holds a 100% working interest.

“The achievement reinforces OGDCL’s commitment to technical excellence, innovation, and deployment of advanced technologies in line with global standards, while advancing indigenous hydrocarbon production and strengthening Pakistan’s energy security,” said OGDCL.

ODGCL is the largest E&P in Pakistan with operations including exploration, drilling operation services, production, reservoir management, and engineering support.

The company has the most extensive exploration acreage in Pakistan, covering over 40% of the country’s total acreage awarded, with net hydrocarbons of oil and gas.

With over 67%, the Government of Pakistan is the largest shareholder in OGDCL, followed by the OGDC Employee Empowerment Trust and the Privatisation Commission of Pakistan.
