KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister and Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon Wednesday paid a detailed visit to the Red Line BRT project to review ongoing development work.

The officials briefed him on the progress of the project.

Sindh Secretary Transport Asad Zamin and CEO Trans Karachi Fawad Ghaffar Soomro also accompanied him.

Memon directed that the project be completed on time and that its quality be maintained.

Speaking to media, the senior minister said that the Sindh government was committed to bringing modern, state-of-the-art projects for the citizens of Karachi as the city deserves.

He said Pakistan People’s Party government was fully focused on Karachi’s development because the city was the economic hub of Pakistan and, for this reason, has often been targeted.

Memon said PPP has completed one of the city’s best projects, Shahrah-e-Bhutto, a state-of-the-art road and an important gateway for Karachi. Two phases of this project have been completed, and the third phase will be completed soon.

He noted that the Transport Department recently completed and opened the Taj Haider Bridge to the public, while the Chief Minister of Sindh inaugurated the Korangi Causeway Bridge, built according to modern standards.

Citizens of the Korangi Industrial Area and surrounding neighbourhoods are benefiting from these projects, and the public has praised the quality of the roads and bridges.

He said all these projects were a part of the overall development in Karachi and the work to improve the city’s infrastructure is ongoing.

As the Mayor of the city, he remains on tour of the city to oversee the work of the improvement of roads, while the Local Government Department and KMC are jointly monitoring development and repair work to provide better facilities to the citizens.

Red Line BRT, which faced criticism in the past, was restarted after reinforcing old construction and has now been completed.

He said that University Road and its connecting roads had improved significantly. The government had planned to open the main corridor on University Road for general traffic by March 2026, while work on bridges, underpasses, and U-turns would continue on other sections of the project.

Sharjeel said that development work continued around the clock, with the CEO of Trans Karachi and the Secretary Transport inspecting daily.

He would also make surprise visits to review progress and that immediate action would be taken wherever obstacles were identified.

He said work was ongoing on both the Red Line and Yellow Line BRT projects, and that upon completion, the citizens would see a clear improvement in travel facilities.

He acknowledged that temporary difficulties were inevitable during major development projects in a densely populated city like Karachi.

He said that projects like the Red Line were designed with the future in mind to reduce traffic congestion and allow safe and comfortable travel. He clarified that these Sindh government projects, worth billions of rupees, were for the people of Karachi and meant to strengthen the city as an economic and transport hub.

According to him, a significant portion of the Sindh government’s budget was being spent in Karachi, while the city’s hospitals served patients not only from Karachi but from across Sindh and the country.

In response to a question on the Gul Plaza tragedy, he said that a five-member cabinet committee had been formed under the chairmanship of the Sindh Chief Minister. After receiving the committee’s report, action will be taken against those responsible.
