No Afghan refugees or camp at Torkham border: Sheikh Rashid

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has said that there are no Afghan refugees at the Torkham border and the government has not established any camp in the area.

Addressing a press briefing during his visit to Torkham on Sunday, Rashid said that authorities must have discussed the issue of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan with the Afghan Taliban leadership.

"We have assured the Taliban that Pakistan's soil will not be used against them and the Taliban have also given an assurance that they will not let anyone use Afghanistan's land against us."

To a question, the interior minister pointed out that the DG ISI's Afghanistan visit is not a surprise as the Central Intelligence Agency chief had also visited the war-torn country and discussed issues and emerging situations with the Afghan leadership.

He mentioned that in the future, a political delegation from Pakistan could also visit Kabul but a decision will be taken by the prime minister. Rashid said that Pakistan wants peace in the region and wants to see a stable Afghanistan.

On September 4, ISI chief Lt General Faiz Hameed, along with a delegation, landed in Kabul to discuss the prevailing situation, trade, and other issues.

The surprised “open” visit of the ISI chief was flashed on television screens soon after one of his photographs holding a cup of tea along with an all-smile Pakistan’s Ambassador to Afghanistan Mansoor Ahmad Khan at the lounge of Kabul’s Serena Hotel went viral on the social media.

Talking informally to journalists in Kabul, the ISI chief said that he is in Afghanistan to get a briefing from Ambassador Khan about the latest situation.

“We have worked for peace and stability in Afghanistan and we will continue working for lasting peace in the region. There is nothing to be worried about.” he stated.

The visit took place at a time when the Taliban are all set to announce their future government amid demands from Pakistan and the international community to ensure the formation of an inclusive government, having the representation of all ethnic groups.
