ISLAMABAD: The overall output of the Large Scale Manufacturing Industries (LSMI) increased by 8.16 percent in the first half (July-December) of 2020-21 compared to July-December 2019-20, as most of the major manufacturing sectors posted growth, shows the data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Friday.
According to the provisional Quantum Index numbers of the Large Scale Manufacturing Industries (QIM), the LSMI output increased by 11.40 percent for December, 2020 compared to December, 2019, and 13.51 percent, if compared to November 2020.
The LSMI Quantum Index Number (QIM) was recorded at 143.30 points during July-December 2020-21 against 132.49 points during the same period of the preceding year.
The LSM data released by the PBS after collecting it from the Provincial Bureau of Statistics (BOS), the Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC) and the Ministry of Industries showed that the OCAC recorded month-on-month growth of 11.52 percent in December 2020 against previous month, and 23.91 percent growth was recorded year-on-year in December 2020 against December 2019.
The data showed that the Ministry of Industry-related sectors witnessed an increase of 20.04 percent in December 2020 against November 2020 on MoM basis, while Year-on-Year basis, it registered a growth of 13.62 percent in December 2020 as compared with same month of 2019.
The PBS data said the LSM-related data to the BOS month-on-month witnessed negative 2.2 percent growth in December 2020 against the previous month, and on YoY basis, the BOS witnessed growth of 2.89 percent in December 2020 against December 2019.
The production in July-December 2020-21 as compared to July-December 2019-20 has increased in textile, food, beverages and tobacco, coke and petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, non-metallic mineral products, automobiles, fertilizers, paper and board and rubber products, while it decreased in iron and steel products, electronics, leather products, engineering products and wood products.
Textile, the top contributing sector to the overall big industry output, increased by 2.61 percent, food, beverages and tobacco 20.22 percent, coke and petroleum products 5.01 percent, pharmaceuticals 13.11 percent, chemicals 10.68 percent, automobiles 11.23 percent, non-metallic mineral products 20.07 percent, paper and board 10.42 percent, fertilizers 7.40 percent, and rubber products 2.02 percent during July-December 2020-21 compared to the same period last year.
The sectors showing decline during July-December 2020-21 compared to July-December 2019-20 included iron and steel products output declined by 1.16 percent, electronics 20.87 percent, engineering products 31.36, leather products 42.65 percent, and wood products 60.13 percent.
The petroleum products witnessed an increase of 5.01 percent as its output went up from 6.829 billion litres during July-December 2019-20 to 7.17 billion litres in July-December 2020-21, while on YoY basis petroleum sector witnessed growth of 23.91 percent as its output increased from 1.069 billion litres in December 2019 to 1.325 billion litres in December 2020.
High-speed diesel witnessed 9.74 percent growth as its output remained 2.809 billion litres during July-December 2020-21 compared to 2.55 billion litres during the same period of last year, and 23.56 percent growth in December 2020, and remained 497.3 million litres compared to 402.48 million litres during the same period of last year.
Furnace oil witnessed 40.09 percent growth in output and remained 265.57 million litres in December 2020 compared to 189.57 million litres in December 2019 and 6.52 percent growth in July-December 2020-21, and remained 1.422 billion litres compared to 1.335 billion litres during the same period of last year.
Motor spirit witnessed 30.17 percent increase in December 2020 and remained 317.66 million litres compared to 244.03 million in December 2019 and witnessed 18.54 percent growth in July-December 2020-21, and remained 1.683 billion litres compared to 1.419 billion litres during the same period of last year.
The LPG witnessed 8.17 percent growth in December 2020 and remained 82.66 million litres compared to 76.41 million litres in December 2019 and 6.39 percent growth in July-December 2020-21, and remained 433.04 million litres compared to 407.02 million litres during the same period of last year.
Jet fuel oil witnessed 17.92 percent decline in December 2020 and remained 64 million litres compared to 77.97 million litres in December 2019 and 37.69 percent decline in July-December 2020-21, and remained 297.37 million litres compared to 477.23 million litres during the same period of last year.
Kerosene oil witnessed 4.46 percent growth in December 2020 and remained 6.32 million litres compared to 6.05 million litres in December 2019 and 3.83 percent increase in July-December 2020-21, and remained 60.9 million litres compared to 58.6 million litres during the same period of last year.
According to the PBS data, sugar production witnessed 30 percent growth as its output remained 1.88 million tonnes during July-December 2020-21 compared to 1.093 million tonnes during the same period of last year, and 210 percent growth in December 2020 and remained 1.423 million tonnes compared to 1.093 million tones, during the same period of last year.
Cement witnessed 20.83 percent growth during July-December 2020-21 and remained 24.575 million tonnes compared to 20.338 million tonnes during the same period of last year, and registered 18.56 percent growth in December 2020, and remained 4.133 million tonnes compared to 3.486 million tonnes during the same period of last year.
Tractors witnessed 39.39 percent growth during July-December 2020-21 and remained 23,237 numbers compared to 16,671 numbers during the same period of last year, and registered 437.26 percent growth in December 2020, and remained 4,196 numbers compared to 781 during the same period of last year.
Motorcycles witnessed 17.66 percent growth during July-December 2020-21 and remained 1.24 million numbers compared to 1.05 million during the same period of last year, and registered 23.66 percent growth in December 2020, and remained 210,101 numbers compared to 169,904 during the same period of last year.
